During this time, between the mid to late 19th century, Orientalism amongst french painters pervaded throughout. Neo-coloniasm was often painted through rose lenses but Gustave on the other hand, portrayed the rasping life of an arid, poor, but yet beautiful landscape.

After failing to win the Prix de Rome, a scholarship to study at the Academy of France in Rome, Guillaumet did as most young men would have done and travelled. He travelled across the Mediterranean and North Africa. He contracted malaria, he was made a Knight of the Legion on Honour, the highest decoration in France, and exhibited all over France, captivating the West through his scenes of the Near East.
